Sparkling Wines in Italy: A Guide to the Country’s Signature Regions

Italy can be told in many ways, and one of the most revealing is through its sparkling wines. Altitude, climate, soil, grape varieties, and production methods shift from region to region, shaping wines that capture the country’s geography in the glass. Within the span of just a few kilometres, the style moves from layered, structured sparkling wines to brighter, fruit-driven expressions produced through either the Metodo Classico or the Martinotti-Charmat method.

Sparkling Wines in Italy Across Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia

In the province of Treviso, in Veneto, the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene have long stood as the benchmark for Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Here, Glera dominates production, yielding wines built around freshness, immediacy, and aromatic precision. Green apple, pear, citrus, and white blossom define the style of Prosecco Spumante, produced predominantly through the Martinotti-Charmat method.

In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the sparkling interpretation of indigenous grape varieties plays a significant role. Among them, Ribolla Gialla remains one of the most compelling, particularly in Martinotti-Charmat versions, where it expresses vivid acidity, taut structure, and remarkable drinkability.

Franciacorta, Oltrepò Pavese, and Trentodoc

Moving west into Lombardy, the conversation shifts to Franciacorta, where the focus turns to the Metodo Classico and extended ageing on the lees. South of Lake Iseo, the lake’s moderating influence and the region’s morainic soils have created ideal conditions for Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, and Pinot Bianco. Alongside Franciacorta, Lombardy is also home to Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico, one of Italy’s most naturally suited territories for Pinot Nero.

Heading north into Trentino-Alto Adige, altitude becomes an essential part of the equation. Vineyards climb Alpine slopes where significant diurnal temperature variation helps preserve acidity, finesse, and aromatic clarity. Trentodoc is the region’s defining denomination. Here, too, the Metodo Classico remains central, with Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Pinot Bianco, and Meunier forming the backbone of production. Citrus, crisp apple, and Alpine herbs often emerge in the aromatic profile of Trentino’s sparkling wines. In Alto Adige, the Metodo Classico takes on a different expression. High-altitude vineyards and the distinctly Alpine climate produce sparkling wines marked by citrus notes, floral aromatics, and pronounced salinity.

Sparkling Wines in Italy Across Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna

Crossing into Piedmont reveals two distinct identities. The first is the intensely aromatic world of Asti Spumante and Moscato d’Asti, where Moscato Bianco takes centre stage with exuberant notes of peach, sage, citrus, and white flowers. The second is Alta Langa, where the register changes entirely. Here, the Metodo Classico shapes Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grown in the highest, coolest parts of the Langhe into wines of entirely different character.

In Emilia-Romagna, sparkling wine remains deeply tied to the dining table. Lambrusco, particularly in expressions such as Lambrusco di Sorbara, plays as a natural partner for cured meats and regional cuisine thanks to its acidity, fruit profile, and delicate tannic grip. Alongside it sit Pignoletto, Malvasia, and sparkling interpretations of Albana.

Sparkling Wines of Southern Italy and the Islands

In Sardinia, sparkling production finds expression mainly through Torbato, Nuragus, and sparkling versions of Vermentino, varieties that produce savoury wines with a distinctly Mediterranean character. In Sicily, meanwhile, Etna continues to establish itself as one of Italy’s most compelling sparkling territories, with Metodo Classico wines built primarily around Nerello Mascalese, sometimes accompanied by Carricante.
