“Over the past decade, hotel bars in Southeast Asia have come a remarkably long way. They are no longer places where hotel guests gather for a pre-dinner drink; many have become destinations in their own right, drawing local regulars, international travelers and cocktail enthusiasts.” says Charmayne Chung.
The Evolution of Hotel Bars in Southeast Asia
What sets the region apart, is an increasingly confident embrace of local identity. “Rather than reproducing a conventional idea of luxury, hotel bars are celebrating ingredients that belong to the region — pandan, calamansi, ginger, tropical fruits and locally made spirits. The result is drinks that feel distinctive and authentic.” Some trends mirror what is happening elsewhere in the world. Low-alcohol cocktails “are gaining momentum,” while sustainability “is becoming a central concern.” Still, Southeast Asia is at a different stage in its evolution. “Compared with Europe or North America, Southeast Asia is still developing, but that is precisely what makes it so exciting. There is a real appetite for experimentation, while remaining deeply rooted in local culture.”
Charmayne Chung and the Value of Hospitality in Cocktail Bars
Charmayne Chung knows the region from the inside. Based in Kuala Lumpur, she is an avid explorer of cocktail bars across Malaysia and around the world, and is known within the industry as the Traveling Barfly. Years spent on both sides of countless bar counters have left her with one firm conviction: “A great bar is never defined solely by what is in the glass. Hospitality matters, connection matters, and so does the way a place makes you feel.”
In that respect, she believes Malaysia and Southeast Asia have a particular advantage. “One of the things that makes our region unique is its hospitality. Service feels naturally warm and genuine. Guests are often remembered by name, bartenders are happy to share stories, and you have the sense of being welcomed rather than simply served.”
